Creek Primitive
How do you preserver meat? Primitive ways as possible please.?
I've killed, cleaned and stored my own meats before, mostly deer. But was stored in a refrigerator/ freezer for this. What I was wondering was what are some primitive ways of storing meat, such as when there is no power, or a SHTF situation. I've never dried my own or made jerky out of it, while I know this would be simple I'm looking more into keeping it fresh and whole after I've got the meat from the animal, but any tips on drying it would be helpful too. I live by a medium flow and size creek by my house. Thanks in advance.
I'm not sure if you could can meat, well I take that back, but I don't know how either, does anyone know?
and please tell me HOW, to do this. I have no clue how to can too.
You can meat in Mason jars using a pressure cooker, but it must be done right with the correct amount of time at the right pressure for your elevation. The canned glass jars must be kept in a cool dark place for longest shelf life.
You can smoke cure the meat with hickory, cotton wood, and other woods that give it different flavors. However the meat must be soaked in a brine solution is the meat is to be kept for long periods and it must be kept dry.
You can pickle the meat in a vinegar solution and then can it with the cold process.
You can salt it and store it in rendered fat. Some native cultures did this to store meat over the winter.
